In his AFL debut for Fremantle in 1995 Jamie Merillo had the misfortune to sustain a broken jaw and thereafter his career failed to ignite. Playing mainly as a rover he made just 15 appearances and kicked two goals in three seasons before being de-listed.
Merillo’s WAFL/Westar Rules career was only marginally more noteworthy, comprising 14 games and two goals with West Perth from 1991 to 1993, 41 games and 15 goals for Claremont (1994-7), 14 games and six goals for Peel in 1998, and four games and two goals with Subiaco in 1999. The undoubted highlight came in 1996 when he was a member of Claremont’s grand final-winning team against East Perth. He also played in the Tigers’ losing flag decider of 1994 against East Fremantle.
