After showing considerable promise as a youngster Jason Mooney struggled somewhat during the first few years of his AFL career with Sydney, which got underway in 1992. By 1996, however, he was firing on all cylinders and was a crucial factor in the Swans making it through to the grand final in which they went down fighting against North Melbourne. Mooney played at centre half forward in the flag decider having operated as a ruckman as well as in defence earlier in his career. Wherever he played, he applied himself with great strength and fortitude but during the second half of the nineties he was hampered to a significant extent by knee problems.

After the 1998 season Mooney was traded to Geelong and his first season  with the Cats was arguably the best of his career. Unfortunately, a recurrence of his knee problems prevented him from kicking on, and in 2000 and 2001 he only managed to play a dozen games. Disappointing though this was, he did at least get the opportunity to play alongside his brother Cameron who debuted with the Cats in 2000.

Jason Mooney retired at the end of the 2001 season having played 97 AFL games and kicked 51 goals for the Swans before adding 32 games and 50 goals with Geelong.
