Jim Fitzgerald was a skilful and highly dependable permanent back pocket player who joined Geelong from CYMS Geelong and made his senior VFL debut in 1944. He won the club's best and fairest award the following year. After 108 games, including a short stint as captain, he crossed to St Kilda in 1951 and added a final 14 games to his career tally both that year and the next. The move could not have been more ill-timed as Geelong won the 1951 and 1952  premierships.
