Calmness and consistency personified, Jim Kearney was an immensely dependable defender or ruckman who was particularly strong overhead. He joined Geelong from Geelong West and went on to play 72 VFL games and kick 17 goals for the club in 1915 and from 1917 to 1921. He served as team captain in 1918 and 1919.

In 1916 Geelong went into recess because of the war a nd Kearney made a temporary switch to Richmond where he played seven games without registering a goal.
