Jim Conquest had played for Prahran in the VFA in 1899-1900 and 1902, and spent the interim year of 1901 serving with the 5th Victorian Mounted Rifles in the Boer War, before joining Melbourne in 1903. A leg injury sustained prior to the start of that season meant that he had to wait until 1904 to make his VFL debut. A rover and half forward, he was a regular player for the Reds in his first season, but thereafter struggled to maintain his place in the side. In 1909, after 54 games and 22 goals for Melbourne, Conquest returned for a third and last stint with Prahran taking his total number of appearances to 34, in which he registered eight goals. In 1911 he moved to South Australia and sought a clearance to Sturt but this was not forthcoming until the following year. In the event he only played three times for the Double Blues before apparently retiring, whether because of injury or for some other reason is unclear.
