Originally recruited from Mentone College, Jim Cowell played 92 VFL games and kicked 27 goals for St Kilda between 1902 and 1908. In 1909 he had to fight to win a clearance to Melbourne but ended up playing just seven games and kicking one goal. He played mainly as afollower, where his work was effective and energetic rather than spectacular.
