Jim Fitzpatrick commenced his senior career with Hawthorn prior to that club's involvement in the VFA, but really came into his own after moving to VFL club Melbourne in 1907. Playing initially as a defender, and later in the pivot, he amassed 81 games for the Fuchsias in six and a half seasons before moving to Richmond in 1913 where he added a final seven games to his VFL tally.
