Originally recruited to Richmond from Yarra Park school as a forward Jimmy Smith was quickly transformed into a highly tenacious and reliable half back flanker, one of the very best of his time. Between 1917 and 1926 he played a total of 132 VFL games, including the grand finals of 1919 (lost), 1920 and 1921 (both won). He played state football for Victoria five times. After retiring as a player he served on the Richmond committee from 1927 to 1931.
