Footscray recruited Michael Joseph Ryan - always known as ‘Joe’ - from Footscray Rovers and he proved himself to be a decided acquistion. Gritty, aggressive and energetic he wass without doubt one of the finest rovers of his generation. Between 1937 and 1948 he played 167 VFL games and kicked 261 goals as well as representing Victoria. Few players at the club enjoyed such a high reputation as he emphasised with best and fairest wins in 1946 and 1947. He also topped the Bulldogs goal kicking list in 1945 with 37 goals. A bother, Bill Ryan, also played for Footscray.
