A true utility, happy to line up in any position on the field, Horrie Nelson was a strong kick and safe mark, but the thing which made him stand out most was his exceptional pace. Having progressed through the grades at Norwood he made his senior debut in 1953, the first of 71 games he was to play over two stints. Not always an shoe-in start for the seniors, he was a member of the Redlegs’ 1961 seconds flag-winning team.

In 1955 he joined St Kilda and played 11 matches without scoring a goal for the year.
