From Marrar in the Riverina region of New South Wales, John Fox played rugby as a youngster, and it is arguable that this influenced his football style, which featured strong tackling and a penchant for running in straight lines. He played 60 VFL games for Geelong and scored seven goals from 1960 to 1965. Mostly used on a wing, he could also operate effectively on a half back or half forward flank.
