Hailing from Warracknabeal, John Hayes was a dependable back man who served Fitzroy well during a uniformly dismal time for the club. Between 1961 and 1966 he played 94 VFL games and kicked 21 goals for a team which only once finished in the top half of the premiership table whilst succumbing to three wooden spoons.

After five matches of the 1966 season Hayes replaced the departing Ralph Rogerson as Lions skipper, but the team yet again underperformed, finishing last with just a solitary win for the year.
