Centre half back in Hawthorn’s breakthrough 1961 premiership-winning combination John McArthur was a tough, no frills defender of the old school. What he lacked in pace he compensated for with raw, dogged determination which enabled him to stick to his opponent like glue. He played 61 VFL games and kicked 10 goals for the Hawks in 1958 and from 1960 to 1963.
