After struggling to win favour at Collingwood, where from 1957 to 1959 he managed just half a dozen senior appearances, John Powell developed into a handy centreman after crossing to Fitzroy. Between 1960 and 1963 he played 48 VFL games and scored 12 goals for a Lions side that, apart from his first season when they finished third, found the going unduly strenuous, and became little more than a chopping bock for most other teams.
