John Thompson used to travel between Ararat and Melbourne in order to train and play with Richmond. A defender, he was solid and consistent during what was an unusually bleak time for the Tigers. Most commonly deployed at centre half back, he played 65 VFL games without registering a goal from 1959 to 1963. He had a particularly good year in 1960, when he finished third in the voting for the club’s best and fairest award.
