John Waddington commenced his senior football with Bendigo Football League club South Bendigo and topped the competition’s goal kicking list with 72 goals in 1957. The 1958 season saw him embark on a VFL career with North Melbourne. A half forward at this stage of his career he later developed into a swift moving, long kicking defender. In 1964 he represented Victoria at centre half back. When he left the Kangas at the end of the 1966 season he had played 132 VFL games and kicked 30 goals.
In 1967 Waddington was installed as captain-coach of Ovens and Murray Football League club Benalla and the following year he won a Morris Medal as the best and fairest player in the competition. He later moved to Queensland where he played for Morningside.
