Although he was in many ways the quintessential tagger - tough, hard-nosed and close checking - Jon Hassall also regularly accumulated numerous possessions in his own right and could be a damaging player when allowed to run free. He gave good service to Collingwood (50 games, 1994-6) and Hawthorn (44 games, 1997-9) before spending time with SANFL side South Adelaide. He tended to be used in more attacking roles during the Hawthorn phase of his career, having functioned mainly as a defender or midfield tagger with the Magpies.
