Touted as a major find when he first fronted up for Melbourne in 1952 Keith Carroll arguably failed thereafter to justify that assessment. Nevertheless, he did manage to play in two winning VFL grand finals, an achievement the vast majority of footballers can only dream about. Normally deployed on a half back flank, his career comprised 58 games from 1952 to 1958. He failed to register a single goal. The premiership triumphs came in 1956, when the Demons accounted for Collingwood in the grand final, and 1957, when Essendon was bested. Carroll’s last match was the 1958 grand final in which Melbourne succumbed to Collingwood. His retirement as a player, aged 27, was brought about by niggling muscular problems.
