Ken Phillips was a highly effective wingman from East Burwood who was recruited by South Melbourne ahead of the 1963 season. At one point it looked as though he would be lost to the VFL following an employment transfer to Edenhope, but the employers reversed their decision leaving him free to continue with the Swans. In 1963-4 and from 1966 to 1969 he played 60 VFL games for South and scored 28 goals.
