Laurence Schache was a highly capable key forward who enjoyed a varied playing career with four clubs. Strong both overhead and at ground level, he kicked well with his favoured left foot. Originally from Hopetoun in Victoria, he played junior football with Essendon, but failed to progress to the seniors. The 1988 season found him at Sturt where he played 28 SANFL games, and kicked a club list-topping tally of 63 goals. He then crossed to West Torrens and added 32 games and 73 goals over two seasons, topping the club’s list with 45 goals in 1990.

In 1991 and 1992 he played for Brisbane where, after a solid debut season when he headed the Bears’ goal kicking, his form fell away, and after making 29 appearances in total and scoring 64 goals he was de-listed. His next and final port of call was Woodville-West Torrens where he enjoyed premiership success for the only time in his playing career in 1993. His four season stint with the Eagles saw him play 34 senior matches and boot 78 goals. His death after a short illness in 2002 shocked many members of the football community especially given that he was aged just 34.
