Nicknamed ‘Hands’ because his hands were reputed to be the biggest in the VFL, Leo Maguire was a strong marking, long kicking centre half back. From Terang, he played in Richmond’s seconds in 1940 before progressing to the seniors the following year. Over the course of his eight season league career he played 96 games and scored four goals. He lined up at centre half back in the winning grand final of 1943 against Essendon as well as the following year’s losing premiership decider against Fitzroy. He was listed high among the Tigers’ best players after the latter match.
