Leo Murphy was a talented defender who, in winning Hawthorn’s 1936 and 1937 best and fairest awards became the first player in the club’s history to go ‘back to back’. Between 1930 and 1940 he played 132 VFL games and kicked 22 goals for the Mayblooms. Early in his career he tended to be used in a back pocket or on a half back flank but later he was moved to full back with telling effect. A smooth ball handler, he kicked well, and always showed an abundance of aggression.

Leo Murphy’s son John Murphy played with distinction for Fitzroy, South Melbourne and North Melbourne while a grandson, Marc Murphy, played for Carlton. Collectively, they are the only father-son-grandson combination in V/AFL history to have all played 100 games.
