Pacy and skilful, Les Jones played as a small forward and occasional rover during the first part of his career with East Fremantle before switching to the centre. His 89 WANFL games for Old Easts between 1928 and 1932 included membership of three premiership-winning teams. He registered 65 goals.

The 1933 season saw him at Melbourne where he would play 121 VFL games and kick 88 goals. Initially used as a centreman he later migrated to a half forward flank, which was the position he assumed in the 1939 grand final against Collingwood, when he contributed three goals to the Demons’ winning tally of 21.22.

After four games of the 1940 season Jones left Melbourne to take up the coaching role at Terang and he went on to play for VFA side Port Melbourne later that same season, although he was not a member of the Borough team which downed Prahran in the grand final. In 1941 he returned to Melbourne but after making just a single appearance he transferred to Brighton where he eventually ended his playing career in 1945.
