After struggling to make his mark at Essendon, where he played just 15 games and scored 15 goals in 1921-2, Les Woodfield came into his own as a tough, pacy defender at South Melbourne, where he commenced in 1923. An idea of how highly regarded he was can be inferred from the fact that he was chosen to represent Victoria no fewer than eight times, in an era when interstate matches between the top three states were regarded as the pinnacle of the sport. Woodfield’s career with South came to an end in 1927 after he had made 78 appearances for the club, and kicked 11 goals.
