After struggling to make an impression at Sydney (18 games in 1985-6) and Brisbane (59 games, 1987-90) Mark Roberts, who hitherto had played mainly as a defender, was transformed by North Melbourne into a dynamic and thoroughly effective forward as well as a model clubman. In 1996 he was a key member of North’s winning grand final team against his original V/AFL club. When he retired in 1999 he had played 125 games for the ‘Roos while over the course of his entire career he registered 169 goals, 150 of them with North.
