Rugged, determined and resourceful, 'Mocha' Johnson played briefly with Coburg Juniors and Brunswick before joining Carlton in 1927. He had a fair turn of pace for a big man, and was equally effective as a follower or across the half back line. In 10 seasons with the Blues he played a total of 109 VFL games and kicked 70 goals. A VFL representative player on two occasions, he was a ruckman in Carlton's losing Grand Final team of 1932 against Richmond. Johnson captained the Blues in 1934.
