Max Ritchie served North Melbourne well both on the field and off it. As a player he was mostly used in the ruck. He was a resolute and determined performer who always gave a hundred per cent during a career which spanned the years 1955 to 1960 and saw him play 55 games and kick seven goals. He later returned to North as chairman of selectors during the club’s first truly great era of the 1970s, when five consecutive grand finals were contested for two flags.
