Footscray’s Merv Laffey was a useful rover who had the misfortune to retire the season before the Dogs broke through to claim their first VFL premiership. Between 1945 and 1953 he played 72 VFL games and booted 85 goals. His younger brother Bernie also played briefly for Footscray.
