After commencing his senior football career at Beaconsfield, where he won a club best and fairest award in 1978, Michael McKenna joined Footscray the following year. Aggressive and tough, he excelled at gaining possession under duress. He was also skilful, pacy and resolute, traits which perfectly equipped him to function as a tagger, which is the role he most commonly adopted.

Between 1979 and 1984 he played 80 VFL games and booted 45 goals for Footscray. The 1985 season found him at Richmond where he played all 22 games for the year and kicked 10 goals. He then retired from football while arguably at his peak as a player in order to focus on academic pursuits.
