After an impressive debut campaign with Subiaco in 1991 Michael Symons was chosen by Essendon at that year’s National Draft. Boasting spectacular leaping ability, he played as a forward early in his AFL career with the Bombers, but his kicking for goal left something to be desired. After being shifted to the backlines his form became more consistent, and he settled down to become a regular member of the side. Between 1992 and 1999 he played 109 games and kicked 80 goals for Essendon. He also played in the club’s 1999 reserves premiership win.

De-listed by the Bombers at the end of the 1999 season he found himself back at Subiaco in 2000 when he produced some of the most sparkling football of his career to claim the Lions’ fairest and best award and run second to team mate Richard Ambrose in the Sandover Medal count. He retired a year later having played 41 games for Subi and kicked 21 goals.
