After playing 21 games and scoring 20 goals for South Fremantle in 1991-2 Michael Dunstan was drafted by Fitzroy and made his AFL debut in 1993. Solidly built at 185cm and 88kg, he performed well for the Lions, mainly as either a midfielder or half forward, in 38 games over two seasons in which he registered 30 goals. In 1995 he was traded to West Coast only to sustain AFL career-ending injuries which limited him to just five appearances and a single goal. He managed to struggle on with South Fremantle until 1998, but only managed to add 12 games and 10 goals to his respective career tallies.
