Michael Ford was a dependable, close checking defender who gave Footscray useful service in 96 games from 1985 to 1989 and in 1991. He registered 19 goals. He started the 1992 season with St Kilda but after playing just a couple of games crossed to Sandringham in the VFA, whom he helped to that year’s premiership courtesy of a 19.16 to 13.8 grand final defeat of Williamstown.

The last phase of Michael Ford’s playing career saw him captain-coaching Oakleigh in what would be the club’s final season in the VFA. He has since been non-playing coach of Springvale, whom he steered to a VFA flag in 1995, and more recently Sydney club North Shore.
