A versatile key position player, Oakleigh Districts product Michael Wright played his early football with South Melbourne as a forward before producing some of his best football at full back. He played 40 VFL games and scored 14 goal for the Swans from 1978 to 1980. In 1981 he was involved in a three way player trade deal which saw him on the move to Central District, with the Bulldogs’ Peter Jonas joining North Melbourne and Maurice Boyse of North transferring to the Swans.

Wright did well at Centrals over the course of a four season stint which saw him make 60 senior SANFL appearances and kick 163 goals. A pay dispute led to his crossing to North Adelaide but he only added a single game and three goals before retiring.
