Canberra-born Michael Werner commenced his senior football career with ACTAFL club Manuka Weston before progressing to West Torrens in the SANFL in 1988. Playing at full forward, he had a good year with the struggling Eagles, and was their top goal kicker with 38 goals. Prior to the start of the 1988 season he had represented the ACT at the Adelaide bicentennial carnival.

The 1989 season saw Werner moving to VFL club Essendon where he would experience mixed fortunes over the course of a four season stint which saw him play 40 games and score 60 goals. His best season was 1990 when he kicked 27 goals but then missed participation in the Dons’ finals campaign which saw them reach the grand final. After the 1992 season he was traded to Sydney where he played 20 games and booted 20 goals in 1993-4.

Werner later played for Gisborne in the Riddell District Football League and in 1997 he amassed a competition record tally of 173 goals.
