St Kilda recruited Neville Linney from Malvern Grammar and, after an explosive start to his VFL career, he was selected in the Victorian squad for the 1953 Adelaide carnival. Mostly deployed as a half back flanker, although he was also occasionally tried as a forward, he largely failed to build on his initial promise, and when he played the last of his 43 league games in 1957 he was only 24 years of age. He later embarked on a colourful career in country football.
