After playing 62 VFA games for Port Melbourne between 1968 and 1971 Norm Goss was recruited by South Melbourne. Tough, tenacious and with sublime foot passing skills, particularly using his favoured left foot, he was an important player for the Swans for half a dozen seasons during which he played 121 VFL games and kicked 161 goals. Named club best and fairest in 1974 he also played interstate football for Victoria and was widely acknowledged as one of the most creative footballers in the league. After transferring to Hawthorn in 1978 he produced some of the best and most consistent football of his career, compensating in smarts for what he had lost in pace. He was a reserve in the Hawks' 1978 premiership team.

Norm Goss' father, also known as Norm Goss, was a legendary figure at Port Melbourne who also played some games in the VFL for Hawthorn when Port were in mothballs because of the war.
