Paul Bryce was a useful defender who could also take a turn in ruck or as a tall forward. He made his VFL debut with North Melbourne as an eighteen year old in 1987 and soon established himself in the team. After 48 games and 26 goals in three seasons, however, he was traded to Melbourne in exchange for draft picks 11 and 35. Playing mainly as a defender he added 26 games and three goals to his respective career tallies and might be adjudged somewhat unlucky to be de-listed by the Demons at the end of the 1992 season. Offered a lifeline by Sydney he fronted up for one final season of big time footy in 1993 but his enthusiasm for the game was waning, and after playing 17 games and kicking 14 goals for the year he opted to retire, still aged just twenty-five.
