North Ballarat product Paul Hills commenced his AFL career with Essendon in 1991 and over the next couple of seasons showed steady and sustained improvement. A wingman, he not surprisingly boasted plenty of pace, and his all round skills were good. In 1993 he was a key player for the Bombers as they surged to an unexpected but richly deserved premiership. In the grand final defeat of Carlton he was serviceable rather than spectacular, collecting 16 disposals to narrowly out-point his direct opponent in Brett Sholl.

The 1993 grand final remained the pinnacle of Hills’ playing career. Over the next three seasons, owing to a combination of injuries and poor form, he managed just 12 senior appearances. At the end of the 1996 season he was de-listed having played 63 AFL games and kicked 11 goals.
