After playing most of his junior football in defence Percy Johnson was converted into a ruckman by East Fremantle, in which position he played in the victorious grand final of 1957 against East Perth as well as in 13 state games for Western Australia. Between 1951 and 1958 and again in 1962 he played 180 WANFL games for Old Easts and kicked 217 goals. In 1959 he was appointed captain-coach of Swan Districts but the club endured a dire campaign which led to Johnson being sacked. His stint with Swans saw him add 21 games and 19 goals to his respective career tallies. In 1960 and 1961 he played 27 games and registered 45 goals for Claremont, topping the club's goal kicking list in the former season. Percy Johnson's last game of league football was the 1962 WANFL Grand Final in which East Fremantle slumped to defeat against Swan Districts.

During the 1970s Johnson had brief stints coaching South Fremantle and West Perth. He also appeared as a critic on the Channel Seven World of Football show.
