Peter Kiel had a superb debut season with St Kilda in 1982 which was capped by winning the club’s best and fairest award. Thereafter it would probably be fair to observe that his form dipped, although he remained a regular senior player until 1986, by which time he had played 80 games and kicked 29 goals. Capable of filling a number of positions, he was deployed most commonly in defensive roles as his career progressed.

The 1987 season saw Kiel at Melbourne but he retired after playing just one senior game. He did, however, play in the Demons’ winning night series grand final against Essendon.
