After struggling to make the grade at Fitzroy, where he managed just eight appearances and no goal in 1977 and 1979, Peter Johnston transferred to West Torrens where he came into his own to some extent. Playing mainly at full forward he topped the Eagles goal kicking list in 1982 and 1983, and overall registered 177 majors in 59 games from 1980 to 1983.
