Peter Somerville was the son of former Essendon forward John Somerville, and like his father he joined the Bombers from Moe. His V/AFL career comprised 160 games between 1988 and 1999, in which he booted 89 goals. A ruckman, he struggled early on to get a game because Essendon boasted two of the finest ruckmen in the game in the shape of Simon Madden and Paul Salmon. He enjoyed his best years during the mid nineties and his career highlight was playing in the Bombers' 1993 premiership team. Capable of extraordinary high leaps when attempting to mark, he lacked pace but had good general skills. He represented Victoria in 1991. After leaving Windy Hill Peter Somerville played for North Ballarat in the VFL for a time.
