The son of Collingwood's Ray and brother of Heath, Rhyce Shaw made his debut for Collingwood in late 2000 but did not establish himself as a Magpie regular until the 2003 season. A half-back flanker capable of a dashing run, Shaw established himself as a key member of Collingwood's back line in the ensuing six seasons. A slight decline in form, coupled with some off-field discipline problems led to a parting of ways at the conclusion of the 2008 season and after 94 games wearing the black and white, he was traded to Sydney for a draft pick.

The move worked wonders as Shaw settled immediately into the Swans' back six, repelling attack after opposition attack. Over the next four seasons he missed only a single game and his hard work was rewarded with a premiership medallion when Sydney pipped Hawthorn to take the 2012 flag. Injury saw him miss a large part of the 2013 season, but he barely missed a game in the following two seasons, before hanging up the boots at the end of 2015. His 143 Sydney games took his career total to 237.

From 2016 to 2018 Shaw was an assistant coach at the Swans before moving to North Melbourne at the start of the 2019 season. Following Brad Scott's shock departure as senior coach in May 2019, Shaw was appointed interim head coach from Round 11.
