Having played reserves football for Carlton Richard Foster was recruited by Port Adelaide, and he proved himself a handy acquisition. Elusive, and boasting plenty of pace, he slotted in nicely across half back, and could also play as a wingman or on a half forward flank. He played in a grand final-winning team against Glenelg in his debut season of 1988 and later also appeared in the winning flag deciders of 1990, 1992 and 1995. He retired after the 1995 grand final defeat of Central District, having played 145 SANFL games and scored 32 goals.
