Scotch College product Richard Loveridge was widely touted as the recruit of the year after his debut season with Hawthorn in 1982. The following year saw him contributing a couple of goals to the Hawks’ grand final demolition of Essendon. Playing mainly as a rover, he could be a damaging player, and was dangerous near goal. He played in a second premiership side in 1986, but missed out two years later when the Hawks accounted for Melbourne. At his peak during the mid-1980s he was selected to represent Victoria in 1985 and 1987. He retired in 1989 aged just 26 in order to focus on his professional career. Between 1982 and 1989 he played 136 VFL games and kicked 120 goals.
