Having progressed through the grades at South Melbourne Robert Doyle made his senior League debut in 1969. A hefty, powerful ruckman he had played 77 VFL games and kicked 36 goals for the Swans by the time he crossed to VFA first division club Port Melbourne eight weeks into the 1975 season. He rounded off his career in the SANFL with South Adelaide.
