Robert Mace commenced his senior playing career in 1977 with VFA second division side Frankston. A year later he was in the centre as the Dolphins overcame Camberwell in the grand final to achieve promotion to first division. Mace ran fourth in the Field Trophy voting that season.

The 1980 season found Mace at Hawthorn where he managed just seven games and seven goals in two seasons before being cleared to St Kilda. His time with the Saints was much more productive, as he added 72 appearances and 32 goals between 1982 and 1986. While at St Kilda he proved himself a tough, determined and versatile footballer.

In 1987 Mace joined Brisbane, but played only one game for the club. He rounded off his playing career back at Frankston, where he took his final games tally with the club to 56, and the number of goals kicked to 62.

Somewhat confusingly, in 1988 Robert Mace represented Queensland at the bicentennial carnival in Adelaide.
