Canberra-born Robert Neill commenced with Sydney in 1992 but failed fully to establish himself, managing just 21 AFL games in three seasons. The 1996 season saw him at St Kilda where he once again tended to struggle to hold down a senior place, although he was selected in both the Saints’ 1996 AFL Ansett Australia Cup-winning team and the side which lost to Adelaide in the 1997 AFL grand final. At the end of the 1997 season, after 23 games for the Saints, he was de-listed, and crossed to SANFL club Norwood.

Neill enjoyed a fine career with the Redlegs. Playing mainly as a forward he topped the club’s goal kicking list in 1999-2000-1, 2003-4-5 and was selected for the South Australian state league team three times. (He had earlier played two state of origin games for New South Wales.) Between 1998 and 2005 he played 134 SANFL games and kicked 240 goals. After retiring as a player he maintained his involvement in football in a variety of off-field roles.
