A useful utility and ruckman from East Brunswick YCW, Rod Vernon progressed through the ranks at Fitzroy before making the first of an eventual 119 senior VFL appearances in 1954. Always a danger when resting in the forward lines he bagged 72 goals over the course of his ten season career.

Away from football Vernon ran a Milk Bar situated just outside the western end of the Brunswick Street Oval and whenever he had a set shot at that end the crowd would enjoin him to “kick it through the Milk Bar window”.
