Roger Dean epitomised perhaps more than anyone else the quintessential 'Tiger spirit' with which Tom Hafey imbued Richmond after his appointment as coach in 1966. Tremendously resolute and determined, but also highly skilled, he played in two premiership sides - 1967 and '69 - during his 245-game league career with the Tigers. He was skipper of the club for four seasons, including the premiership year of 1969. Normally a permanent back pocket, Dean could also do a job on the forward lines if required, plundering many a goal for the Tigers from free kicks for which he 'staged' with unequalled virtuosity and lack of shame.
